The Good Food Guide 2020 – “Robustly classic cooking using the finest produce to create beautiful, generous dishes” – The Bildeston Crown is a Suffolk top three restaurant

September 21, 2019

In the recently launched Good Food Guide 2020, The Bildeston Crown has retained its cooking score of 5. This means that the inn is considered by the inspectors to be in the top three restaurants in Suffolk.

In all, 14 Suffolk restaurants have been included in the Guide, recognised with a “cooking score” between 1 and 10 with 10 being the highest.  The top three are the same as last year –  Tuddenham Mill remains the one to beat with 6, the highest score for Suffolk, but it is closely followed by The Bildeston Crown and also Maison Bleue with cooking scores of 5. Five other eateries are recognised as either a “Local Gem” or a “Reader Recommend”

There are also some great comments in the review:

Some chefs – thankfully – stick to their kitchen guns. Undistracted by the notion of small plates, outré ingredients or pared-back presentation, Chris Lee remains unwaveringly focused on what he does best: robustly classic cooking using the finest produce to create beautiful, generous dishes. Come hungry and start in the bar with substantial ‘retro nibbles’ such as truffle Welsh rarebit, or deep-fried Camembert with Cumberland sauce, before a starter of lobster Caesar salad or ragù of Suffolk rabbit with orecchiette pasta and pecorino. Mains pack punch after flavoursome punch, too, particularly when it comes to meat and game – locally shot venison, tender as you like, might come with parsnip, cavolo nero and hazelnuts. Push the boat out with whole lobster, or hail the king of fish with a fillet of turbot, snails, spring vegetables and herb sauce. A ‘stunningly gorgeous’ maple crémeux with stout, pear and chocolate was, for one enraptured guest, ‘a whole different level of dessert’, while others heap praise on a tropical passion fruit and mango baked Alaska with piña colada sauce. The well-annotated wine list kicks off below £18.”

Chef/Patron Chris Lee is very happy with the score of 5: “I’m absolutely delighted to continue to be recognised as a “Top Three” Suffolk restaurant. Thank you to the team for all their hard work and support in keeping us at the top. Thank you also to everyone who sent in comments to the Guide. We could not do it without you.”

The Good Food Guide is the annual guidebook to the best restaurants in the UK which has been going since 1951 and is published by Waitrose. A cooking score of 5 reflects “Exact cooking techniques and a degree of ambition; showing balance and depth of flavour in dishes”
